NeoOffice Aqua

On my Mac, I use NeoOffice for all of my word processing It does a lot more, but that's all I use it for.

NeoOffice is a fully-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs) for Mac OS X. Based on the OpenOffice.org office suite, NeoOffice has integrated dozens of native Mac features and can import, edit, and exchange files with other popular office programs such as Microsoft Office.

Released as free, open-source software under the GNU General Public License (GPL), NeoOffice is fully functional and stable enough for everyday use. The software is actively developed, so improvements and small updates are made available on a regular basis. It is available for free from the NeoOffice download page.

They just came out with a version that sports the Aqua interface. When using it, it still feels like the same old OpenOffice rigamarole, but they fixed the File Open/Save dialog boxes with Aqua goodness. All in all, that's all that really matters.

For all of you Windows users, here is the Aqua Open dialog:

The search feature is cool. You can access the Spotlight (it must be Spotlight... though I don't see the Spotlight icon) right from within the Open dialog. In this screenshot, I searched on the term “podcast”. Notice that you can choose the scope from “Computer” to “Home” to the default folder the Open dialog was set to.

I found interoperability with Word 2003 to be a bit challenging. Things don't convert well all of the time and lots of formatting seems to get lost. I'm sure I'll learn to better adapt as I get more familiar.

In the end, no computer should be without a good word processor and I'm sure spreadsheet lovers will say the same about a spreadsheet. Office for both the PC and the Mac are very expensive and OpenOffice fills a nice niche since it's essentially free (you can donate the the developers...) NeoOffice with it's new Aqua goodness makes it even more attractive.

A complete list of advantages to NeoOffice over the regular X11-based OpenOffice can be found here.
