Satan, acid, testacles

Ok, well, you just have to see this to believe it:

Back to YouTube! Via YesButNoButYes

myspace tv

For the past, well, long while, my blog has been dominated by YouTube video posts. I suppose that’s what I’m into these days so it should come as no surprise that the number of video-related posts has soared.

So, one of my favorite reads of the day, haha.nu, had a nice post linking to a music video done up by someone named Yannick Puig for a song called I Lived on the Moon by Kwoon.

It’s a brilliant 3D animation with some cell-shaded and/or hand drawn elements done up 2D in 3D space.

And, it’s not a YouTube video, but a MySpace TV video! MySpace TV video quality seems a bit better than that of YouTube but it’s hard to judge just from this single clip.

Here is the link

I still haven’t figured out how to embed MySpace video so it plays in-place on Primordial Ooze, but whatever. I’ll figure it out one day.

You are advised to visit the video’s homepage and download the high-fidelity Quicktime video at a stunning 640x360.

So, was this post really about MySpace videos or the music video?

  • Looks like an awesome utility for encoding DVD's. I have tons of DVD's that I made on old setups and I'd like to get them in a plain movie format for possible porting to the AppleTV. The DVD's are authored so it can preserve some of the effort I spent...
  • An awesome program to convert photos to movies using cool "Ken Burns" slow zooms and other neat effects. Movies can then be imported into iDVD, iMovie, VideoStudio, or whatever for final production.

Flickrvision and Twittervision

A cool mashup of Web 2.0 apps. You can see in real-time as people post photos on flickr or status updates on twitter with geospacial context. There are two views, classic and 3D view. Classic uses Google maps and looks more or less like this:

Flickrvision_classic

The map is scrolled constantly as new images are given focus. The 3D view looks more or less like this, and the framerate is pretty good here (uses Flash, perhaps Papervision 3D?):

Flickrvision_3d

One problem with the app which makes it nearly useless after your initial visit is it’s inability to allow you to specify a tag or other kind of filter.

Plus, when you leave it running, it seems to cycle through the same 15–20 images and it’s not something you can leave running for an extended period hoping to see more and more content. Maybe it does cycle through more content, but I lost my patience after 5 minutes ;-)

Fictional Diseases

The next time you’re handling nuclear waste or sifting through the remains of a meteorite crash, make sure you don’t catch one of these fictional diseases.

Andromeda Strain— An alien organism brought to earth by a crashed satellite. It initially kills by turning blood to powder or causing bizarre suicidal dementia. It mutates rapidly and thrives on direct energy conversion. It can only survive in a narrow pH range, however, and can thus be destroyed by excess acidity or alkalinity in infected victims' bloodstreams.

Lots more to enjoy and recall from your favorite books and… soap operas?

Marine Corps Marathon

My cousin Andy is running in the Marine Corps Marathon and could use your help. Any donation, however small, would be very welcome! Please consider throwing him some love.

This effort especially hits home for me since someone from my immediate family has Leukemia (in remission!) and I sorely miss Julian, a Marine Sgt. killed last year in Iraq.

Here is a description of what he’s running for, in his own words:

I am training to participate in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I’m completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure! I am also running the Marine Corps Marathon in Honor of our brother, friend, son and fellow Marine Julian Arechaga of the 1st Battalion 6th Marines 2nd Marine Division whom we lost in Iraq October 9, 2006. I am raising money for this very important cause and I’m asking you to help by making a contribution! Please use the link in this email to donate online quickly & securely. You will receive email confirmation of your donation and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation. I thank you in advance for your support, and really appreciate your generosity!! My goal is to raise $3,500 By August 1st. http://www.active.com/donate/tntliny/andyrandazzo Please forward this email to as many people as you can to encourage them to donate as well! Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Andy Randazzo

That must sting a little...

Feast your eyes on this freakish javelin accident:

As reported by YesButNoButYes.

It looks like the guy impaled by the javelin was ok in the end.

Debugging Final Cut Express HD startup problem

I was using Final Cut Express HD on my MacBook and I found the need to change some of my scratch disk settings to use my external 500GB Lacie hard drive.

The problem was that the next time I started FCE HD, the program threw up an error dialog complaining about my scratch disks. On this occasion, my external drive was not attached.

So, I went and fiddled with the settings again and restarted. This time… FCE HD did not start. The splash screen came up but nada after that. The program simply vanished.

I poked around but could not find a way to fix the problem.

Every day or so, I’d try something new. Google was little help. I tried opening up the application by “Show Package Contents” but the directory which seemed to have settings did not have settings for scratch disk. In fact, deleting what I thought were settings basically did nothing.

It was then that I figured there must be documentation on fully uninstalling FCE HD. I was hoping not to have to do this since the install takes an hour on my MacBook (not sure why). But, I thought the uninstall procedure would give me insight into locating the bad settings.

Turns out I was right. Using the following Google search:

“final cut express full uninstall”

Yielded this link:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182

In the end, I had to delete:

~/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Express User Data

Doing so and restarting FCE HD caused it to ask me a few questions I remember being asked when I first installed and viola, problem solved.

Great guide to ergonomic computing

The Nuby on Rails, Geoffrey Grosenbach, has posted a very complete and enjoyable bit on Ergonomic setups for programming on a computer… The Mechanics of Programming. The lessons are applicable to any kind of computer use so long as it is continuous and long-lasting ;-)

I found his adoption of the Dvorak keyboard layout enticing… but not enough to make me switch:

*Dvorak* This section may be controversial, so I’ll keep it short. I went cold turkey (http://nubyonrails.com/articles/dvorak) to the Dvorak keyboard layout about a year and a half ago. I’ve never regret- ted it and my hands are much more comfortable because of it. The layout of the keys means that one’s hands travel a shorter distance when reaching for the keys. …

There is a PDF of the essay.

Lots of good ideas there…

Feeling tired?

The only reason I am posting this is so you can look at this cute picture. Sleeping on Feet

The real reason for the original haha.nu post was to discuss 22 tips to avoid feeling tired from WebMD.

In short:

  • Have breakfast
  • Eat every three to four hours
  • Fill up on more fiber
  • Fuel your brain with omega-3s
  • Stay hydrated
  • Watch caffeine intake after noon
  • etc.

Happy Independence Day

I’ve been pretty bad about maintaining my flickr account lately. So, in honor of Independence Day, I thought I would send along the a new round of photos. Hopefully, I’ll keep things up to date for a while.
